WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

We noted that it was common for Australian organisations to get around the latest charity event e.g. bushfires – but none stuck around for the long term.

The impacts of these life-changing events for the community and emergency services are not as short-lived as the one-off charity contributions that are made as a promotional event – this is where Firehouse 51 Brewing Co is different. We have an ongoing commitment to donate a percentage of all profits to support charities and raise awareness of issues impacting the community on an ongoing basis.

Our Story

Firehouse 51 did not start it’s journey as a brewing company – gaining inspiration from one of his favourite TV shows Chicago Fire. Founder and firefighter Haz was compelled to develop a charity that focused on firefighter’s values and supporting the community. An example of this is the American tradition of ‘passing the boot’ – where firefighters would raise money for affected community members by passing a boot around after a job to collect donations.

The emergency services and community focus of Firehouse 51 stems from Haz’s first-hand experience working for the police force and then transitioning over to become a Firefighter.

The impact of the community members affected by emergency situations stayed with Haz and he wanted to be able to give back, support and help them rebuild. Debriefing with colleagues, they too wanted to help but didn’t know where to start.

Incorporating the brewery component to the FH51 idea all came together when Haz visited All American Brew Works in Anaheim California, a social enterprise brewery owned and operated by veterans to support veterans. Haz was blown away by the concept and felt inspired that it would tie in perfectly with his ideals of having an emergency services and community focused support agency.

Following this encounter, Haz set to work on the FH51 concept – providing a safe space for emergency services and community members to attend following events to debrief with their colleagues, receive support and act as a support mechanism to get people together instead of suffering in isolation.

At Firehouse 51 we aim to create a community/family where all members are welcomed, valued and understood. We also aim to support members of the emergency services community who may not be able to work due to various mental and physical issues through providing employment within the brewing company where possible. We hope that this will encourage currently serving members to attend and share their experiences with people who understand and can relate to their situations.
